Charity Challenges

Scarborough to Whitby Coastal Hike 2024

For 2024’s Orange Tree Dental Charity Challenge we decided to hit the coast. Less bucket and spades however, more like hiking boots and plasters! This year we chose to hike the Cleveland Way between Scarborough and Whitby, some 21 miles of rugged terrain (and the odd dive bombing gull). Setting off once again at the crack of dawn, we assembled a ragtag group of hikers from the practice, including a certain Ms A Crellin who we dragged out of retirement to keep us company on the cliff tops. Lovely to have her back amongst the Orange Tree Team again!

The hike took us from the centre of Scarborough northwards along the coastal path all the way to the middle of Whitby. Achey legs and blisters were tempered by some astonishing views and some very welcome refreshments at the Ravenscar cafe. One path closure near Boggle Hole added a dishearteningly long detour, but the promise of picking up a support group at Robin Hood’s Bay kept everyone going. Eventually Whitby Abbey came into sight some 10 hours after setting off, and weary legs made their way down the famous 199 steps into the town for some very well earned fish and chips.

This year with your help we raised a fantastic £1578 for Yorkshire Air Ambulance, bringing our total raised over the years to a BRILLIANT £7400! Well done to everyone involved, and as always, a massive thank you to everyone who supports and sponsors us.

Wold Rangers Way 2023

After a Covid related hiatus we were back with a bang with our annual charity challenge!

Summer 2023 saw us take on the daunting task of hiking the entire 44 miles of the recently created Wold Rangers Way – in ONE DAY! Centered around Driffield, the circular route took us out from the Market Place, through to the rolling Wolds of Huggate, Fridaythorpe and Thixendale, before looping back close to Sledmere and Kilham and finally back into the town centre again.

One August morning, a brave band set off at 5.30am from Driffield Market Place heading west for the Wolds. Up hill and down dale through some of the most glorious countryside England has to offer, we hiked our way along the Wold Rangers Way. There were some tears, there were definitely some blisters, but despite this a successful group of hikers emerged out the other side. Landing back in the Market Place at 9pm with 44 miles in their legs, a weary but elated team was warmly welcomed by fellow supporters, before celebrating with some well earned refreshments in the nearby pub. Well done to all involved and thanks to the support crews along the way.

Once again we were proud to be raising money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. We have always been amazed by the fantastic support our patients and the people of Driffield have given us over the years. We thank you again for helping to save lives across the length and breadth of Yorkshire.

Hull Marathon 2019

Part 2 of our Charity Challenges for 2019 involved 7 members of the practice taking part in the Hull Marathon.

Minnie Lyons-Coleman, Emma Clayton, Tim Quarmby, Rebecca Quarmby, Kerry Robinson and Carol Kennedy all ran relay legs varying between 5 and 8 miles in length.

Karen Baker however stepped it up by taking on the entire 26.2 mile challenge – with a fantastic finishing time of 4hrs 15mins in very hot conditions we are all extremely proud of her!

Well done to everyone who took on the challenge and helped to raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. As of the end of the Marathon we have raised an amazing £3000 for the charity. Thank you so much to all our wonderful patients and friends for helping us reach this wonderful total.

Wolds 20 Hike : May 2019

Big hike done! On a truly wet and miserable day 12 of us set out to conquer the Wolds around Millington. Armed with compasses, O/S maps, checkpoint co-ordinates and a lot of waterproof clothing we headed off from Millington Village Hall with the hope of making it back before dark! Splitting into 2 teams we trekked up hill and down dale, one team tackling 13 miles and the other a 20 mile course. Nature did it’s best to stop us in our tracks, be it hail-storms, howling winds, an Alsation on the loose or herds of cows blocking our paths. It also provided a stunning backdrop for us as the miles went by. Beautiful scenery such as Millington Pastures, Thixendale, Givendale and Kirby Underdale were all on route. A sterling effort by all meant we all managed to return to base before the 8 hour deadline, some of us with just 10 minutes to spare!  Sadly both the village cafe and pub were shut by the time we finished, the celebratory drink would have to wait!

Thank you to all those of you who have sponsored us on our various practice challenges. It really does make a difference to the lives of some of those in need. If you would like to sponsor us then you can do so by clicking this link or via the sponsor forms at the practice.
